louis wain?

relatives of mine have a print of 'the fire of the mind agitates the atmosphere' - what looks like two cats radiating static electricity. i read up on his story and even looked for books on him (way back in 1990 or so, maybe earlier).

with as much as we know today about psychopharmacology and the workings of the mind, looking back at louis wain's creative approach - and life experience - is fascinating :)

I found out about him in my Abnormal Psychology textbook.

    :)

I can't wait to learn more. Are a lot of books on him still in print or will I have to dig? (don't mind digging for old books, it's a hobby of mine)

OK, I found out about him thru a book my high school boyfriend stole from the high school library, called "The Mind" !

And dug it out years later to scan the photos to a psych major I was sweet on.

I found out about him through a band I was into, Current 93. They had one of his cats on the cover of Thunder Perfect Mind...and I think they sang about him too! I also read a feature on Nick Cave who is obsessed with Louis Wain and owns original paintings that he did!
There are two books that I have that are probably still in print! Cats of Louis Wain by Patricia Allderidge and Louis Wain: The Man who drew Cats by Rodney Dale....lots of cool pictures. Both of them are worth owning!

Actually, I found out about Wain though the Alfred Mainzer cards. I found some old Mainzer cards in an antique shop and were really taken by them. Then when I started searching on the web, links to Wain started showing up, more than Mainzer did. I had the two confused for a while. Both are pretty great.

Here's a link to someone who is reprinting some Wains. Not the best selection, but new cards.

i found about Louis Wain many years ago through a psychology book. that was my first introduction to him. the book had the standard 6 pictures of his cat art lined up to show the progression of his illness. i was very drawn to this and fascinated by it. not only since i'm interested in psychology in general, but also art and cats as well. i also am a fan of the band Current 93, and i found out more about Louis Wain through them. their lead singer David Tibet is a huge Wain fan, and as Roger here mentioned, they used one of Wain's cats on one of their album covers (and also one of his landscape paintings inside the gatefold of another album of theirs) and they have done a couple songs about (or mentions) Louis. The song that really touched me the most that they did is called, "(yet) the bloodbells chime' it's sad, but beautiful. if anyone is interested in hearing it, send me a message here and i can send the song to you for those who have yet to hear it. it's really lovely and touching. i later leaned more about Louis via the internet and then by the books i bought about him and have been a huge fan ever since...
